The importance of a permanent water tight sewer tap cannot be over emphasized. Precision cut holes and secure connections prevent ground water infiltration and root growth penetration in sewer mains. PREDCO's Sewer Tap Saddles ensure secure and precise connections.

Tap Saddle Installation

  1. Cut a precision hole in the sewer main 4 1/2" for 4" tap or 6 1/2" for 6" tap. PREDCO saddles fit most 8" pipe without trimming. For larger diameter pipes, trim the saddle where indicated with a hacksaw or a rasp to fit the contour of the pipe. After trimming the saddle, check the fit by inserting it into the hole. Make sure all sides of the saddle rest on the wall of the sewer pipe and that the spigot does not protrude into the follow of the sewer.

  2. Stir the epoxy components together until the epoxy is a consistent streak-less grey color (approximately five minutes, depending on the temperature). For best results, the temperature of the chemical should be between 65° F and 90° F at the time of use. If the temperature is over 90°, this will hasten the setting time. The white-resin and black-hardener are separated in the same jar with a thin barrier. The epoxy will get extremely warm as the chemicals interact and begin to work.

  3. Insert the mixed epoxy into the cavity of the saddle using all the epoxy in the container. The sewer pipe must be clean. It may be wet but not submerged or with water flowing across the joint area.

  4. Install the saddle by placing it into the predrilled hole in the sewer pipe so the curvature wraps the pipe. Press firmly on the saddle. Use the mixing sticks to smooth the epoxy and form a bead between the wall of the pipe and saddle. The epoxy will be firm to the touch in 10 to 12 minutes from the time you start mixing. After the epoxy is dry to the touch, you are ready for the branch connection and backfilling.

Connect with Donut

1. Branch Connection: To make your branch connection, first select the appropriate Fernco donut to secure the branch connection to the tap saddle. Apply this donut to the end of the pipe and push it on, leaving 1.5" of the pipe exposed. Lubricate the outside of the donut, and then insert the pipe and donut into the saddle.

2. Pressure Tests: Pressure tests (air or water) can be made as soon as the epoxy is dry to touch and the branch connection is made. It is recommended that the test be made before backfilling.

3. Backfilling: Use care when backfilling. The epoxy is water tight when it is firm to the touch and continues to cure and gain strength for several hours, even if it is underwater. Care must be taken not to disturb the joint during backfilling operations. The backfill must support the pipe so as not to cause unnecessary strain on the saddle or connection.

Connect with Coupling

PREDCO SPIGOT TAP SADDLES are supplied with Fernco Flexible Couplings to connect the branch pipe. The branch pipe material must be specified at the time of order to ensure that the correct couplings are shipped.

1. Branch Connection: Place the coupling on the spigot saddle. Tighten the coupling band to hold in position. Insert the branch pipe into the end of the coupling and butt it against the saddle spigot. Tighten both coupling clamps to 60 in/lbs. torque.

2. Pressure Test: Pressure test (air or water) can be made as soon as the epoxy is dry to the touch and the branch connection is made. It is recommended that the test be made before backfilling.

3. Backfilling: Use care when backfilling. The epoxy is water tight when it is firm to the touch. It continues to cure and gain strength for several hours even if it is under water. Care must be used to assure the joint is not disturbed during backfilling operations. Backfilling must support the pipe to prevent unnecessary strain on saddle or connection.

PREDCO tap saddles are available in two styles: the Hub Saddle and the Spigot Saddle. The hub saddle uses a Fernco Donut to connect the branch pipe. The Spigot Saddle uses a Fernco Flexible Coupling to connect the branch pipe. The same method is used to attach either saddle to the sewer pipe.

Branch Connection Directions

The PREDCO System ensures a tight sewer tap connection to the branch pipe. Hub tap saddles connect using a Fernco Donut. Spigot tap saddles connect using supplied coupling.
